I think from about the age of 7, I wanted to be a scientist, I even had my own microscope…. But when I wsa your age, I wasn’t sure I was good enough, so I decided to just work as hard as I could through my school exams, go to university and study science I knew I enjoyed (which was Geology) and see what happened. It has certainly worked out really well, mainly due to hard work, but also due to some luck and taking a few risks with moving to new places, even if it was away from all my friends and family!
So, I am really happy with where I ended up! But that is just me, some of my friends only really got into science once they got to A-Levels or University and found a branch of science away from the main ones you do in school that they really enjoyed.
I think the first time I really thought about it was during my GCSEs, when I first started thinking about science properly. I realised about all the cool things scientists get to work on, and decided that would make a good career for me.
Simple answer is NO. Altho, I enjoyed science at (high) school, and was reasonably good at it, I always wanted to work with my hands and become an engineer. I did become an engineer when I left school but whilst doing all the academic/theory stuff associated with all the different aspects of engineering … my interest in science started getting stronger … so I started studying with the Open University … and now i’m a seismologist in a job i love doing
