It’s brilliant! But then I have a quick panic attack, and worry about whether have I done everything right, then I ask mu supervisor and when he confirms it I get this great feeling inside, best described as when I got my first set of results through for my PhD and they were as we expected I felt like doing a lap of the building waving my shirt round my head like a premiership footballer celebrating a goal. These days it’s more like being Andy Murray when he wins a big point at Wimbledon:
It’s a brilliant feeling! James is right though – there’s always a moment where you think ‘this could be exciting, but maybe I’m completely wrong and I’ll end up embarrassing myself.
But discovering new things is why we get into science. It’s an addictive feeling really, it’s what keeps us going in science when we could probably get much better paying jobs elsewhere.
